EU Council Endorses Tech-Driven €191.9B Draft Budget for 2027

-

The Council of the European Union has established its stance on the European Union’s draft budget for 2027, which marks the concluding annual budget within the bloc’s 2021-2027 long-term financial framework. This proposed budget outlines €191.88 billion in commitments and €202.07 billion in payments, excluding allocations from special instruments beyond the EU’s long-term budget.

According to the Council, the budget is crafted with a prudent financial strategy, aimed at ensuring sufficient funding for pivotal EU policies and programs. It is also designed to sustain the bloc’s capacity to address ongoing geopolitical challenges, such as the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, alongside migration pressures.

Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Simon Harris emphasized that the proposed budget would equip the EU with the necessary financial resources to tackle complex geopolitical developments. The Council underscored the importance of preserving adequate financial flexibility to respond to unforeseen events and ensure timely funding of existing commitments.

As the process moves forward, the Council is anticipated to formally adopt its position in September. The timeline for reaching a final agreement with the European Parliament is set for November 16, 2026, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts to finalize the budgetary framework.
