Zelenskyy Urged to Use Tech Solutions in Defence Leadership Amid Protests

-

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is under mounting pressure to reconsider the dismissal of former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, as protests across the nation demand his reinstatement. The reshuffling of Ukraine’s military leadership, which included the replacement of Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi with Mykhailo Drapatyi, has not quelled public dissatisfaction. Fedorov, who declined an offer to serve as deputy prime minister, insists that resuming his role as defence minister is essential to continue his agenda of modernizing and reforming the Ukrainian armed forces.

Currently, the defence ministry is temporarily led by special forces commander Yevhenii Khmara, which complicates any potential return for Fedorov without triggering another leadership change. As protests persist, organizers have announced plans for another rally in Kyiv, vowing to continue demonstrations until Fedorov is reinstated. The political deadlock raises concerns about the crisis extending into a second week.

Amidst the internal political turmoil, Ukraine has intensified its military operations against Russia, launching drone strikes targeting military and economic sites within Russian territory. Newly appointed Commander-in-Chief Drapatyi has been assigned the task of broadening offensive operations, enhancing military capabilities, fostering technological advancements, and escalating operations behind enemy lines. Drapatyi’s appointment has garnered support from various Ukrainian political and military leaders, who commend his experience and leadership abilities. However, military officials caution that he faces significant hurdles, including the potential for increased Russian troop mobilization in the months ahead.

The changes in leadership stem from disagreements over Ukraine’s military strategy direction. While Fedorov has been a proponent of rapid technological modernization, the previous military leadership preferred a more conventional approach. Meanwhile, Russia has downplayed the impact of these leadership changes, asserting that they are unlikely to alter the current situation on the battlefield and that their military operations will persist unaffected.
