Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden has warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ambitions could surpass Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of continued European Union support for Ukraine. Speaking after an EU summit, Frieden highlighted that abandoning Ukraine or succumbing to Russian aggression would enable Moscow to fulfill its objectives. He stressed the necessity of ongoing military and financial assistance to safeguard Ukraine’s sovereignty and deter further Russian expansion.
During the summit, EU leaders also deliberated on implementing stricter restrictions on tourist visas for Russian citizens, aiming to reduce their numbers while stopping short of a complete ban. Frieden indicated that Luxembourg would align its approach with Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel in this matter.
The meeting also addressed migration policy, although an agreement was not reached. Frieden called for a balanced European strategy that addresses irregular migration while acknowledging the economic benefits of legal migration. He pointed out Luxembourg’s dependence on foreign workers to meet its labor market demands.
