Introduction:
In 2022, Indian athletes made significant strides on the global stage, achieving numerous firsts and historic milestones.
1. Neeraj Chopra’s Dominance:
Neeraj Chopra, the Olympic champion, continued to shine by securing a silver medal at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon. This marked India’s best-ever performance at the event since Anju Bobby George’s bronze in 2003. Chopra also made history by clinching victory in the Diamond League, becoming the first Indian to achieve this feat.
2. Commonwealth Games Triumph:
Despite shooting, a traditional medal contributor, being excluded from the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Indian athletes showcased remarkable performances. With a tally of 61 medals, including 22 golds, India surpassed expectations across various sports. Notably, lawn bowls gained attention with India’s success, while Avinash Sable’s steeplechase silver set a new national record.
3. Thomas Cup Badminton Victory:
The Indian men’s badminton team etched their names in history by clinching their maiden Thomas Cup championship in Bangkok. Led by Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth, and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, India defeated reigning champions Indonesia to secure the title, marking a significant milestone for Indian badminton.
4. Nikhat Zareen’s Boxing Triumph:
Nikhat Zareen emerged victorious in the Women’s World Boxing Championships 2022, becoming the fifth Indian woman to achieve this honor. Defeating Thailand’s Jutamas Jitpong in the final, Zareen joined the ranks of legendary boxers like MC Mary Kom, securing her place as a world champion.
5. FIH Women’s Nations Cup Victory:
India clinched the inaugural FIH Women’s Nations Cup title with a 1-0 win over Spain, securing their berth in the 2023-24 Pro League. Gurjit Kaur’s crucial goal propelled India to victory in the summit clash, capping off a remarkable tournament with five consecutive wins.
In 2022, Indian athletes showcased their prowess and resilience on the global stage, leaving an indelible mark in the annals of Indian sports history.
