City’s Title Hopes Fade as Brighton Snatch Late Point

-

Manchester City dropped crucial points in the Premier League title race after being held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday. The champions now sit five points behind league leaders Arsenal, who face Liverpool on Thursday, with their winless run extending to three matches.

The deadlock was broken four minutes before halftime when Erling Haaland stepped up to take a penalty awarded for a foul on Jeremy Doku by Diego Gomez. The decision was scrutinized by VAR before being upheld, allowing Haaland to score his milestone 150th goal for the club. The strike also ended the prolific forward’s three-match scoring drought and took his season tally to 20 Premier League goals.

City looked poised to secure all three points when Bernardo Silva intercepted a poor Brighton pass immediately after the interval. The Portuguese midfielder found himself with a clear sight of goal, but his shot crashed against the upright, denying City a crucial second goal.

The match’s flashpoint occurred when tempers boiled over between City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Brighton defender Maxim De Cuyper. The confrontation required intervention from officials and teammates, with both players subsequently cautioned.

Brighton’s persistence paid dividends when Kaoru Mitoma scored a brilliant equalizer in the 60th minute. The Japanese international collected a pass on the edge of the box and demonstrated excellent technique to guide a low shot beyond Donnarumma’s reach. Brighton then assumed control, building attacks patiently and creating several chances to claim victory. Mitoma nearly turned provider and scorer when he set up Gomez, whose shot was saved before the rebound fell to the Japanese winger, whose follow-up struck the post. Haaland had the final opportunity to win it for City but was denied by Verbruggen’s outstanding reflexes.
