During a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Calgary, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a significant boost in Canada’s support for Ukraine’s defense efforts. As Ukraine continues to face increased missile and drone attacks from Russia, Canada has committed C$350 million (US$253 million) as part of a US-led initiative aimed at supplying Ukraine with essential military equipment, training, and defense aid. This strategic move underscores Canada’s ongoing commitment to strengthening Ukraine’s air defense and drone capabilities.
In addition to military support, Canada is extending C$450 million in loan guarantees to bolster Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This financial backing is intended to facilitate the repair of damaged facilities, enhance energy storage capacity, and ensure a stable electricity supply to critical services, such as hospitals. These measures aim to fortify Ukraine’s energy sector against disruptions and improve resilience.
As part of the visit, Carney and Zelenskyy signed a landmark agreement, marking the beginning of a “hundred-year partnership” between the two nations. This partnership will focus on collaboration in defense, critical minerals, energy, and other key areas, underscoring the long-term commitment to mutual cooperation and support.
In a further demonstration of support, Canada announced that 30% of its new domestic drone production would be allocated to Ukraine. President Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of these drones for operational use on the battlefield, supporting Ukrainian forces and safeguarding civilian populations.
Looking ahead, President Zelenskyy is anticipated to meet with US President Donald Trump in New York later this month. This meeting, potentially taking place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, aims to continue the dialogue and efforts to revive negotiations for ending the ongoing conflict.
