Greenland PM Delivers Pointed Message: US Still Seeks Arctic Territory Control

-

In a forceful address to Parliament, Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has cautioned that American ambitions to control the Arctic island persist despite recent diplomatic calm. Nielsen’s warning on Monday highlighted Washington’s unchanged perspective that Greenland should be governed from the United States, signaling that underlying tensions over sovereignty remain despite surface-level negotiations.

The Greenland leader’s assessment directly contradicts suggestions that the dispute has been resolved through recent diplomatic engagement. Nielsen specifically stated that the US continues to explore “paths to ownership and control over Greenland,” indicating that American strategic objectives in the region have not been abandoned. This declaration represents a significant counterpoint to President Trump’s recent claims of having achieved “total US access” to Greenland through NATO arrangements.

Trump’s interest in Greenland stems from national security concerns related to the Arctic’s strategic importance, particularly regarding Russian and Chinese activities in the region. Earlier this year, the President’s refusal to exclude military options for securing control of Greenland created substantial rifts within the NATO alliance. The prospect of one NATO member potentially using force against another member’s territory represented an unprecedented challenge to alliance cohesion.

While Trump has since stepped back from explicit military threats, his comments suggest active negotiations continue. Speaking to reporters, the President characterized the talks as progressing toward agreement, describing the anticipated deal as crucial for national security. His assertion that “they want us to do it” stands in notable contrast to Nielsen’s warning about continued American attempts to secure control over Greenland.

Denmark’s Foreign Minister confirmed that working-level discussions among the three parties have commenced, focusing on Arctic security cooperation. The establishment of a formal working group suggests efforts to channel the dispute toward productive dialogue. However, the fundamental question of Greenland’s political status and relationship with the United States remains unresolved, with Nielsen’s comments indicating that Greenland’s leadership views American intentions with considerable wariness.
