Washington Summit Aims to Bolster Zelenskyy After Trump’s Talks with Putin

-

In a move to reinforce Ukraine’s position in the peace process, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and a coalition of top European leaders are traveling to Washington, D.C. to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump. The visit comes just days after Trump held a three-hour summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, which the U.S. President claimed had resulted in “BIG PROGRESS ON RUSSIA.”

The Alaska meeting was a significant event, as it was the first time Putin had been on Western soil since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. While no formal peace agreement was announced, a U.S. special envoy, Steve Witkoff, stated that Trump and Putin had agreed to “robust security guarantees” for Ukraine. Sources also revealed that a controversial land-for-peace proposal, which would see Ukraine relinquish eastern territory, was a key topic of discussion.

The delegation accompanying Zelenskyy is a who’s who of European leadership, including French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also confirmed she will be joining the group.

The joint visit is a powerful statement of solidarity with Ukraine. The European leaders and Zelenskyy aim to ensure that any peace deal respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Their presence is a direct attempt to counter any potential pressure from the Trump administration to accept a rushed or unfavorable settlement.
