EU Leaders Urge Ukrainian Freedom to Decide Future Before Trump-Putin Talks

-

European Union leaders, with the exception of Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, have declared that Ukraine must retain the right to determine its own future ahead of the upcoming Trump-Putin summit in Alaska.

In a joint statement, they emphasized that meaningful peace negotiations require a ceasefire or a reduction in hostilities, and that any diplomatic solution must safeguard both Ukraine’s and Europe’s security interests. They stressed that a just and lasting peace must comply with international law, respect sovereignty, uphold territorial integrity, and reject any changes to borders by force.

The EU leaders also underlined that the path to peace cannot be decided without Ukraine’s participation. Their unified stance comes amid concerns that the Alaska meeting could result in concessions to Russia without full European or Ukrainian involvement.

Hungary’s refusal to endorse the statement reflects ongoing divisions within the EU over Ukraine policy, but the majority of leaders remain committed to supporting Kyiv’s sovereignty in the face of Russia’s ongoing war.
