Denmark has issued its most severe warning yet regarding President Trump’s territorial ambitions, with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stating that any US military action against Greenland would completely dismantle NATO and the post-World War II security framework. The stark declaration comes as Trump repeatedly expresses his desire to annex the strategically vital Arctic territory, which possesses significant untapped rare earth deposits and critical geographic positioning.
The escalating tensions follow Trump’s military intervention in Venezuela, where authorities seized President Nicolas Maduro and announced indefinite American control of the oil-rich nation. This aggressive action has heightened European fears about Trump’s willingness to use force to achieve territorial objectives. Trump defended his Greenland interest by arguing that Denmark cannot adequately secure the territory from a national security perspective.
Greenland’s leader, Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, directly confronted Trump on social media, demanding an end to pressure, insinuations, and annexation fantasies. While maintaining openness to diplomatic dialogue conducted through appropriate channels and respecting international law, Nielsen also worked to calm public anxiety by insisting that a US conquest was not realistic and urging efforts to restore previously positive cooperation.
The controversy has unified Europe in support of Denmark, with the European Union declaring its commitment to defending member states’ territorial integrity. Leaders from Britain, France, Finland, Sweden, and Norway all issued statements affirming that only Greenland and Denmark possess the authority to determine the territory’s future status.
