Global Travel Shock: US Halts Immigrant Visas from Major Regions Indefinitely

-

The United States is set to close its doors to immigrant visa applicants from a staggering 75 countries starting January 21. The Trump administration has finalized a plan that targets regions across the globe, indefinitely pausing processing for nationals from these specific states. The decision hinges on the “public charge” assessment, granting officials the power to deny entry to those they believe might require public financial assistance.

This latest policy is being described as one of the most aggressive efforts to limit legal migration frameworks. The directive was circulated via a State Department cable, instructing diplomatic posts to stop processing applications immediately upon the effective date. The scope is massive, affecting diverse populations from Eastern Europe to the heart of South America, and cutting off traditional routes for legal immigration.

The implications for those currently in the pipeline are severe. The guidance explicitly states that even if a visa has been technically approved, the process must be aborted if the visa document has not yet been printed. This retroactive application of the rule is likely to cause chaos and heartbreak for applicants who were days away from finalizing their travel plans.

While there are limited exceptions—principally for dual citizens of unaffected nations or those deemed critical to US national interests—the vast majority of applicants from the listed countries will see their processes stall indefinitely. The administration has framed this as a protective economic measure, though critics view it as a harsh barrier to legal movement.

The countries subject to this new freeze include: Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Antigua and Barbuda, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belarus, Belize, Bhutan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Myanmar, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Colombia, Côte d’Ivoire, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominica, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Fiji, The Gambia, Georgia, Ghana, Grenada, Guatemala, Guinea, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Jamaica, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Lebanon, Liberia, Libya, North Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Morocco, Nepal, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Pakistan, Republic of the Congo, Russia, Rwanda, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Uruguay, Uzbekistan, and Yemen.
