Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is advocating for the resumption of peace talks involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia, aiming to facilitate a direct meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the ongoing conflict. This development follows diplomatic meetings involving US special envoy Steve Witkoff, who recently met with Putin in St Petersburg and Zelenskyy in Norway.
The potential for renewed negotiations comes as Russian officials suggest that discussions between the three countries could resume in November, with Abu Dhabi proposed as a possible venue. Zelenskyy has emphasized Ukraine’s readiness to engage in talks focused on advancing peace efforts and preparing for a high-level meeting to address the war’s resolution. He supports including topics like a ceasefire, an energy truce, and humanitarian issues, such as the return of prisoners, in the agenda.
Zelenskyy has also indicated Ukraine’s openness to freezing fighting along the current front lines, contingent upon receiving security guarantees from the United States and Europe. However, significant challenges remain, including disagreements over territorial claims and Russia’s security concerns, which complicate the negotiation process.
Witkoff characterized his recent diplomatic efforts as constructive and reiterated US President Donald Trump’s commitment to achieving a lasting peace agreement. Despite this progress, uncertainty lingers regarding the ability of the parties to reconcile their differences and facilitate a direct meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin.
