Apple Accuses OpenAI of Misappropriating AI Hardware Development Innovations

-

Apple has initiated legal action against OpenAI in a United States federal court, accusing the company of improperly acquiring trade secrets integral to Apple’s hardware development, manufacturing, and supply chain operations. The tech giant contends that OpenAI gained an unfair competitive edge in its pursuit of consumer AI hardware products through the alleged sharing of proprietary information by former Apple employees who joined OpenAI.

The detailed complaint by Apple suggests that these former employees not only retained confidential data but also facilitated unauthorized access to it. Apple alleges that OpenAI attempted to leverage these insights by reaching out to Apple suppliers and seeking sensitive information during recruitment processes. Among those named in the lawsuit are Chang Liu, who reportedly did not return his Apple-issued laptop upon leaving, and Tang Yew Tan, a former senior executive who later served as OpenAI’s Chief Hardware Officer, accused of engaging in discussions with Apple suppliers before his departure.

Apple’s lawsuit underscores its belief that OpenAI and associated entities have systematically pursued its confidential technology and expertise in manufacturing and product development to expedite their own entry into the consumer AI hardware sector. The company argues that this strategy has been part of a broader effort to poach Apple’s trade secrets and claims that it has directly addressed these concerns with OpenAI previously, though reportedly to no avail.

With over 400 former Apple employees now reportedly at OpenAI, Apple is seeking judicial intervention to prevent further use of its trade secrets. The lawsuit calls for both preliminary and permanent injunctions against OpenAI, along with financial restitution for what Apple describes as deliberate and malicious misappropriation of its confidential business information. As of yet, OpenAI has not issued a public response to these allegations.
