Connecticut Homeowners Turn to Solar Technology as Eversource Proposes Rate Hike

-

Following Eversource’s recent filing for an estimated 11% increase in electric rates, Connecticut residents are increasingly exploring solar energy options, according to Ion Solar Pros (iSP), a local solar and roofing installer. This surge in interest comes as homeowners express concerns about future energy bill hikes. The filing, submitted to the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) on May 20, 2026, proposes an approximate 13% increase for residential customers. If approved, residents could see their monthly bills rise by around $25 with regulatory “securitization” or up to $40 without it, starting July 1, 2027. This marks Eversource’s first rate review in Connecticut since 2017.

The rate increase proposal has sparked significant public opposition. Governor Ned Lamont criticized the move, referencing Eversource’s $1.69 billion annual profit and a 23% boost in shareholder returns over the previous year. Attorney General William Tong emphasized the financial strain on Connecticut families due to high energy costs, while Consumer Counsel Claire Coleman described the filing as “one of the most consequential utility review proceedings in years.” These reactions reflect the widespread dissatisfaction among state officials and residents alike.

Ion Solar Pros has observed a tangible shift in homeowner attitudes toward renewable energy solutions. “Connecticut homeowners who were on the fence are now running the numbers,” said Tom Labbe, Executive Sales Director at Ion Solar Pros. “They no longer trust that the bill is going to stop climbing, and they want to know what they can do.” In response to the situation, iSP has published a comprehensive breakdown of the proposed rate increase on its website, linking all figures and quotes to reliable sources like the Office of Governor Ned Lamont and local news outlets.

As Connecticut residents consider their options, Ion Solar Pros remains a key player in the state’s renewable energy landscape. The company, based in Middlebury, Connecticut, specializes in solar installation, custom solar energy systems, battery storage, and roofing services. With a strong customer satisfaction rating of 4.9 stars, iSP continues to serve homeowners across the state, offering solutions that could mitigate the impact of rising electricity costs. As the proposed rate increase awaits PURA’s review and approval, the debate over energy affordability and sustainability in Connecticut continues to intensify.
