Europe Rallies Behind Ukraine as Trump Tilts Toward Moscow

-

European leaders staged an unusual diplomatic push in Washington this week, joining Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for high-stakes talks with US President Donald Trump amid growing concern over America’s shifting stance on the war in Ukraine.

The move came just days after Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, where the US leader appeared to endorse positions favorable to Moscow. His public remarks left Kyiv and its allies worried that Washington was preparing to pressure Ukraine into concessions.

Determined to avoid a repeat of Zelenskyy’s earlier bruising encounters in the Oval Office, leaders from Germany, France, Britain, Italy, and other European powers stood shoulder to shoulder with the Ukrainian president. Their goal was clear: present a united front, defend Ukraine’s sovereignty, and prevent Trump from sidelining European security interests.

The discussions reflected lessons from Trump’s unpredictable diplomacy. European officials leaned heavily on flattery and careful messaging, while Zelenskyy himself offered repeated thanks to the US president in a bid to maintain goodwill. Yet behind the gestures was a deeper anxiety – that Trump’s balancing act between Kyiv and Moscow could leave Europe exposed.

Reports suggest Trump floated the idea of new talks between Zelenskyy and Putin, though Moscow has yet to confirm such a meeting. He also hinted at possible US security guarantees for Ukraine, but later ruled out sending troops, suggesting only limited military support such as air cover. Many in Europe fear this signals a slow American retreat, with pressure building on Ukraine to cede occupied territories.

For now, the show of European unity has bought time. But with Russia continuing its assault and doubts growing over Washington’s long-term role, European leaders face the challenge of crafting their own strategy to safeguard Ukraine – and their continent – should Trump choose to step back.
