Greece Launches AI Training Program for Secondary School Teachers

-

Greece is set to introduce a nationwide initiative that trains secondary school teachers to use artificial intelligence in the classroom, beginning with a pilot program in 20 schools next week. Educators will be taught to use a customized academic version of ChatGPT designed to support lesson planning, research, and personalized learning.

The government plans to expand the program across the country in January, positioning Greece among the first nations to formally integrate generative AI into public education. Officials say older students will gain access to the tool in the spring under strict supervision to ensure safe and responsible use.

The initiative reflects Greece’s broader ambition to become a regional technology hub, supported by a national strategy to prepare citizens for the rapid advancement of AI. Supporters argue that the technology can enhance teaching effectiveness and help classrooms adapt to modern learning needs.

However, concerns remain among educators and students. Some pupils fear overreliance on AI in an already exam-heavy system, while teacher unions warn that excessive dependence on technology may undermine critical thinking and increase screen addiction. Many educators stress that adopting AI should go hand in hand with improving basic school infrastructure and supporting holistic learning.
