Netanyahu Criticized for Using Technology to Label UK ‘Islamic Republic’

-

In a recent podcast interview with Israel’s army radio, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stirred controversy by labeling the United Kingdom as the “Islamic republic of Britain” and suggesting it could become the “first Islamic republic to get a nuclear weapon.” His comments have sparked backlash from both British officials and Israeli opposition figures, who accuse him of perpetuating Islamophobic stereotypes and straining international relations.

The British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office responded to Netanyahu’s remarks by calling them “completely unacceptable” and confirmed that the matter has been raised with the Israeli government. These statements come at a time of heightened tensions between the UK and Israel, largely due to Israel’s military actions in Gaza and the UK’s increasingly critical stance on Israeli policies.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has previously indicated that the UK is considering ramping up pressure on Israel, potentially through additional sanctions and trade restrictions related to illegal settlements. This diplomatic friction is part of a broader pattern of deteriorating relations between Israel and several Western allies, with the Gaza conflict serving as a focal point of contention.

Netanyahu’s comments, which followed his praise for journalist Randolph Churchill, son of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, have also been condemned by Israeli opposition voices. Avi Dabush, a political opponent of Netanyahu, criticized the prime minister for jeopardizing ties with a key international partner at a time when Israel is experiencing mounting diplomatic isolation.

As debates over Islamophobia and anti-Muslim rhetoric intensify in Britain, Netanyahu’s remarks are seen as particularly inflammatory. The comparison to Pakistan, which has been officially known as the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and has possessed nuclear weapons since the 1990s, adds another layer of complexity to the geopolitical discourse surrounding his statements.
