Poland Uses Advanced Surveillance to Foil Russian Plot Targeting Ukrainian-American

-

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced the thwarting of a plot allegedly orchestrated by Russian-backed operatives to assassinate a Ukrainian-American individual in Warsaw. Tusk highlighted the gravity of the situation, noting that this marks the first attempt by a Russia-affiliated entity to target a U.S. citizen within the borders of another NATO member nation. Polish officials have identified the intended victim as a U.S. citizen of Ukrainian descent, deemed a threat by the Russian government.

Authorities arrested a suspect on August 7, accused of being recruited by Russian intelligence services, who is now in custody for a three-month period. The operation was a collaborative effort with U.S. intelligence agencies, as stated by Poland’s minister responsible for overseeing intelligence operations. This case heightens existing concerns in Europe over alleged Russian activities aimed at political adversaries, supporters of Ukraine, and individuals perceived as antagonistic to Moscow.

European authorities have previously intercepted suspected plots of assassination, sabotage, and arson, purportedly linked to Russian intelligence networks. Tusk cautioned that Russia might continue to target individuals it finds troublesome across various countries, emphasizing the need for Poland and its allies to stay vigilant and ready to counteract such threats.

The Russian government has yet to respond to these allegations, while the U.S. State Department has acknowledged the reports but has refrained from providing further details. This incident adds to a growing list of events across Europe, which Western officials attribute to alleged Russian intelligence operations, particularly since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine.
