At a congress for the United Russia party, Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged to bolster national security and safeguard the country’s borders amid escalating drone attacks by Ukraine. Putin acknowledged the prevailing challenges and asserted that Russia is taking steps to address them, ensuring the safety of the nation and its people despite ongoing assaults.
The president’s comments followed reports of Ukrainian drone strikes targeting infrastructure within Russia, including an oil refinery in the Krasnodar region, leading to fires and damage. Ukrainian officials have stated that these strikes are focused on diminishing Russia’s military capabilities. President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine indicated that the attacks are specifically aimed at energy facilities that bolster Russia’s war efforts, with operations extending deep into Russian territory. Kyiv has framed these actions as retaliatory measures in response to Russian attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure.
In recent weeks, there has been a noticeable surge in cross-border drone activities, affecting oil refineries and logistical networks within Russia and areas under Russian control. The situation in Crimea has also been impacted, with authorities reporting issues such as fuel shortages and power outages.
The conflict, initiated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, has seen both nations increasingly targeting each other’s critical infrastructure as part of their broader military strategies, further escalating the ongoing war.
