US First Lady Melania Trump is set to host Russian and Ukrainian representatives at the White House on November 5, in a move aimed at furthering diplomatic discussions following her involvement in a temporary ceasefire in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in Ukraine’s Kherson region. The meeting is anticipated to address the ceasefire initiative and explore possibilities for continued humanitarian efforts.
According to a White House statement, Melania Trump, who independently engaged with both sides, played a key role in facilitating the five-day ceasefire that began on October 27 and concluded on November 1. This agreement allowed for the evacuation of several hundred civilians, predominantly to Ukrainian-controlled areas.
Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, acknowledged the First Lady’s team for their contributions to securing the ceasefire and coordinating the evacuation. The ceasefire document was reportedly signed by representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States, with the US acting as a guarantor of the agreement.
Despite the ceasefire, concerns linger about the military situation in Oleshky. Ukrainian military sources have expressed apprehension that Russian forces might have utilized the pause in fighting to reinforce their positions. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials have refuted claims of ceasefire violations, asserting that any military movements were related to demining operations.
While several hundred civilians remain in Oleshky, humanitarian aid continues to be provided to those unable or unwilling to evacuate. Additional evacuation operations may be considered in the future, depending on the evolving situation.
The upcoming White House meeting could serve as a platform for advancing diplomatic engagement between Russia and Ukraine, although the identities of the representatives attending and the specific agenda have not been disclosed by the White House.
