This summer’s severe heatwaves have led to at least 35,000 excess deaths across Europe, with expectations that the true number will rise as more nations finalize their analyses. Notably, Germany, France, and Spain have reported a combined total of over 25,000 estimated deaths linked to the extreme heat. Germany alone has experienced around 14,000 heat-related deaths from April to early August, marking it as the deadliest summer on record for heat in the country. Meanwhile, Spain has faced nearly 5,000 deaths attributed to the heat since May, also setting a new record.
In France, there have been approximately 7,300 excess deaths recorded from late May to July, though this preliminary figure does not account for August. Other European countries such as the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland have also noted significant increases in mortality rates during these periods of extreme temperatures. The heatwaves have consistently driven temperatures over 40°C throughout large portions of western and central Europe, shattering various national and local temperature records.
These intense heat conditions, exacerbated by climate change, are becoming more frequent and severe, according to scientists. The challenge in identifying heat-related fatalities stems from the fact that extreme temperatures can exacerbate pre-existing health issues, such as cardiovascular and respiratory problems, rather than being directly noted as the cause of death.
As more delayed mortality data is processed and August’s numbers are included, experts anticipate an upward adjustment in the overall death toll across Europe. The situation underscores the escalating public health risks associated with increasingly severe and frequent heatwaves, highlighting the urgent need for measures to mitigate these impacts.
